The cut of gems boosts their brilliance through the creation of multiple surfaces that reflect light. This gives the final piece of jewelry its beauty as well as its color and shine.

The art of gem cutting is a long-standing practice. The selection of the kind of cut therefore depends on the size of the rough stone the quality of the stone and, in part, on market trends. A well-designed cut also allows to reduce the impact of inclusions, or the imperfections present in the stone. Precious Stone Cuts The Brilliant Cut

The brilliant cut family includes the round brilliant cut and the cuts that result from it such as oval, drop, heart, navette.

The brilliant cut is typically round and is commonly used to make diamonds. It involves the creation of a total of 57 facets on the stone. 33 are in the upper area comprised of the table and crown, and 24 in the lower section known as the pavilion. The fifty-eighth facet is represented by the lower apex of the gem and is where all the faces come together. Vincenzo Peruzzi of Venetian origin invented this cut in 1600 and developed it specifically for diamonds. However it's now used with other gems too. It results in the loss of around 60% of the weight of the stone, but with the benefit of its final sparkle and beauty.
